Breathing is something we do every moment of every day, often without a second thought.
Yet what many people don’t realize is that how we breathe has a profound impact on our energy, focus, stress levels, and overall health.
This is something I personally work on daily. It’s so easy to fall into unconscious mouth breathing, especially during stress, busy workdays, or even while sleeping. But with awareness and gentle practice, we can shift back to nasal breathing, and the effects can be truly transformative.
In practices like Qigong, breath is everything. It’s the bridge between the body and mind. A powerful tool to regulate the nervous system, cultivate calm, and restore balance.
{ At the end of this article, I’ll guide you through a simple 2–5 minute daily breathing practice you can start today. }
While breathing happens automatically, mouth breathing and nasal breathing are not equal.
When we breathe through the mouth:
In contrast, nasal breathing supports the body in powerful ways:
✨ Filters, warms, and humidifies air — helping protect the lungs
✨ Supports immune health — reducing irritation, colds, and allergies
✨ Encourages diaphragmatic breathing — improving oxygen efficiency and posture
✨ Promotes calm — activating the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system
One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) benefits of nasal breathing is its role in producing nitric oxide.
Nitric oxide is a naturally occurring molecule that:
The nose and sinuses produce nitric oxide, and when we breathe through the nose, it is carried into the lungs, supporting better oxygen uptake (estimated up to 10–20% more efficient) and overall vitality.
💡 A simple way to enhance this even further?
Try gently humming, with your lips gently together, on your exhale — this can increase nitric oxide release and deepen the calming effect.
In today’s fast-paced world, especially for healthcare workers, corporate professionals, and caregivers, the nervous system is often in a constant state of stress.
Nasal breathing is one of the simplest and most accessible tools to shift this.
By slowing the breath and breathing through the nose, we:
This is why in Qigong, breath is primarily slow, deep, and nasal, paired with gentle movement to restore flow and balance in the body.(Note: There are other specialized breath techniques used as well.)
This practice doesn’t need to be complicated.
You can begin to build awareness of your breath:
Simply notice:
Am I breathing through my mouth or my nose?
And gently guide it back — without judgment.
To help build this habit, try this Rectangle Breathing Practice:
🕒 Set a timer for 2–5 minutes, three times a day (start with 2 minutes and add on as you feel more comfortable)
Repeat slowly.
✨ Let your breath expand into your belly (diaphragm)
✨ Feel the ribs soften as you exhale
✨ Relax the shoulders and jaw
No one around you will even know you’re doing it.
Afterward, simply pause and notice:
👉 How do you feel?
👉 Is there more calm, clarity, or ease?
Over time, this small practice can help retrain your breathing patterns and support a natural shift toward nasal breathing throughout your day.
Be patient with yourself. Like any habit, it takes awareness and consistency.
To naturally support nitric oxide production and healthy breathing:
